Terms and Definitions

ACE
  • The highest card in each of the four suits in a standard deck of 52 cards. In Blackjack, can count as 1 or 11. In CRAPS, the single spot on a die.

ACE-DEUCE
  • In CRAPS, the two-dice combination of 1 and 2.

ACTION
  • Total amount of money wagered in a game.

AHEAD
  • Winning during any session of play.

ALL ACROSS
  • In CRAPS, a bet that covers all the box numbers, (Across the Board).

BACKBOARD
  • In CRAPS, the side of the table farthest away from the shooter, where dice are thrown.

BACK LINE
  • In CRAPS, the DON'T PASS and the DON'T COME areas on the table layout.

BANK
  • The HOUSE money in any given game.

BEST BET
  • Odds are better for the player in any gambling game.

BET
  • Any wager placed by players in any gambling game.

BET THE LIMIT
  • Wager most money allowed.

BIRD CAGE
  • Machine that draws KENO numbers.

BLACK
  • In ROULETTE, 18 numbers colored in black.

BLACKJACK
  • In BLACKJACK, a natural 21.

BOX CARS
  • In CRAPS, two dice combination of 6 - 6.

BOX NUMBERS
  • In CRAPS, numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. Also known as PLACE NUMBERS.

BREAKING HAND
  • In BLACKJACK, any two-card hand that can exceed 21 with one more card drawn.

BUST
  • In BLACKJACK, to go over 21, to GO BROKE.

CAGE
  • Area where all money and chips are stored.

CASH IN
  • Exchange chips for cash at the cage.

CATCH A NUMBER
  • In KENO, select any winning number.

COLUMN BET
  • In Roulette, bet on twelve numbers lined up in a column on the table layout.

COME BET
  • In CRAPS, bet in COME area made after the shooter has established a point.

COME OUT
  • In CRAPS, first roll of the dice by the shooter.

CRAPS
  • In CRAPS, numbers 2, 3, and 12.

CRAP OUT
  • In CRAPS, to throw any CRAPS on the COME OUT roll. Also, rolling a '7' before the point.

CROUPLER
  • In Roulette, French name for the dealer.

DEUCE
  • Shorthand named for the number 2.

DON'T COME
  • In CRAPS, bet placed in the DON'T COME area, exact opposite of the COME BET.

DON'T PASS
  • In CRAPS, a bet against the Shooter.

Double Down
  • In BLACKJACK, double your bet on first two cards dealt.

EASY
  • In CRAPS, roll of dice which the two-dice combinations of 4, 6, 8, 10, are rolled other than pairs.

EVEN MONEY
  • A winning bet payoff equal to the original amount wagered.

FACE CARD
  • Any King, Queen, or Jack in a deck.

FIELD
  • In CRAPS, numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12.

FIELD BET
  • In CRAPS, a bet on the FIELD numbers.

FIRST BASE
  • In BLACKJACK, first position at the table to the let of the dealer.

FLAT BET
  • Any bet that pays off at even money.

FLUSH
  • A hand with any five cards of the same suit.

FOUR OF A KIND
  • Any four cards the same.

FRONT LINE
  • In CRAPS, a bet on the Pass Line or COME.

FULL HOUSE
  • Any hand with three of a kind combined with any other pair.

HARDWAYS
  • In CRAPS, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, and 5+5.

HIGH-LOW
  • In CRAPS, ONE-ROLL bet either 2 or 12.

HIGH ROLLER
  • Any gambler who bets a lot of money.

HIT
  • In BLACKJACK, to ask for another card.

HOUSE
  • Any casino where gambling is offered.

HOUSE LIMIT
  • The most the HOUSE allows you to bet.

HOUSE NUMBERS
  • In Roulette, the 0 and 00.

HOUSE PERCENTAGE
  • By virtue of the rules, the HOUSE takes in as income. Same as HOUSE EDGE.

INSURANCE
  • In BLACKJACK, bet made to protect your hand against dealer's BLACKJACK.

IN THE HOLE
  • Losing during any session.

JACKPOT
  • Top prize on SLOT, VIDEO POKER and KENO.

KENO BOARD
  • Big illuminated panel, on which numbers drawn in KENO, are displayed.

LAYOUT
  • Design printed on felt table.

LET IT RIDE
  • After winning, leaving it on the table for the next bet. Also, PRESSING the bet.

LINE BET
  • In Craps, a bet on the Pass Line.

NATURAL
  • In BLACKJACK, a 21 on the first two cards. In CRAPS, a 7 on the COME OUT roll. InBACCARAT, a two-card total of 8 or 9.

NO DICE
  • In CRAPS, when dice bounce over the table.

ODDS
  • The mathematical likelihood that a certain event will or will not occur. In CRAPS, an extra bet in addition to the original bet.

ODDS ON
  • In CRAPS, leave odds in action on the COME OUT roll.

OFF
  • In CRAPS, any be a player has suspended.

ONE ROLL BETS
  • In CRAPS, any bet which wins or loses on a single roll of the dice.

PAIR
  • In any game, two of the same.

PASS
  • In CRAPS, a win on the Pass Line.
Pass Line
  • In CRAPS, front line, RIGHT WAY bet.

PAYLINE
  • A line on SLOT MACHINE windows to determine a winner a winning must line up.

PAYOFF
  • The return on a winning wager.

PAYOFF ODDS
  • Odds at which bets are paid off.

PERCENTAGE
  • Amount of your bet HOUSE keeps by paying you at less that true odds when you win.

PICTURE CARD
  • Any King, Queen, or Jack in the deck.

PIT
  • Area in casino, collection of table games. Off limits to all but casino personnel.

PIT BOSS
  • Person who supervises all games.

PLACE BET
  • In CRAPS, a bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10.

POINT
  • In CRAPS, numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10, when rolled following the COME OUT roll.

PRESS A BET
  • To increase size of a bet. Often done after a win by the amount of that win.

PROPOSITION BET
  • In CRAPS, any bet other that PASS, DON'T PASS, COME, and DON'T COME.

PUSH
  • In BLACKJACK, a tied hand - no win and no loss.

RACK
  • A storage device to hold gaming chips or slot tokens.

RED
  • In Roulette, eighteen numbers in red.

ROYAL FLUSH
  • A hand of 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace, all of the same suit.

SEVEN OUT
  • In CRAPS, to roll a '7' after the POINT had been established, shooter loses.

Shooter
  • In CRAPS, person rolling the dice.

SIX and OVER
  • In BLACKJACK, a hand of six or more cards totaling 21 or less. In some casinos an automatic win often paying 2 to 1.

SNAKE EYES
  • In CRAPS, two dice of 1 and 1.

SOFT HAND
  • In BLACKJACK, any two-card combination of an ace and any card other than a 10-value or face care. Ace counts as either 1 or 11.

SPLIT
  • In BLACKJACK, to divide any first two cards of the same value into separate hands.

SPLIT BET
  • In Roulette, placing a chip on the line between two numbers.

STAKE
  • Amount of money you allocate to any gambling session.

STAND
  • In BLACKJACK, to decline any more cards.

STICKMAN
  • In CRAPS, the person who wields the stick.

STIFF
  • In BLACKJACK, two cards totaling 12-16.

STRAIGHT
  • A hand of five cards of consecutive value, such as 7, 8, 9, 10, and Jack.

STRAIGHT ROYAL FLUSH
  • Five cards constituting a ROYAL FLUSH lined up in sequence, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace.

SUCKER BET
  • Any bet with bad odds, and getting a win is almost impossible.

THIRD BASE
  • In BLACKJACK, the last position on the table, the last to receive a card.

TOKE
  • A tip for the dealer.

VIGORISH
  • Commission paid by players to the HOUSE.

WORKING
  • In CRAPS, any bet which had been called OFF buy now wants back in action.
